Meditation is wonderful for self awareness, concentration and for improving the focus. Once the person is aware of the self and have clear focus, it will help in understanding various things more clearly and ability to learn, memorise, paying attention and be present minded. Meditation help us in understanding our behaviour, overcoming the negative thoughts, and enhancing the constructive or the positive thoughts. Meditation is also helpful in relieving the stress level, increasing calmness and improving the relationship. One should definitely know how to meditate and understand the process behind this and the amazing power to meditate. Don't do self meditation if you are new to it. you should have somebody to guide you. This is important. It needs a lot of practice. There are various things which need to be taken care of while doing or starting meditation. For example how to start, the Place chosen for doing meditation, How to sit, what to do and what not, How to end the meditation session etc.
